What is the thickness of the zabuton and if they compress with use?

The thickness of the standard zabuton is around 2.5 inches. The large and jumbo size zabuton is around 3.5 inches. Unlike the cotton zabuton, our kapok zabuton will lose some of its loft and compress a little with use. Kapok is very resilient and comfortable material.

Kapok is a fiber extracted from the seedpod of the kapok tree and harvested in the rainforest. It works very well for cushions because kapok's superior resilient qualities.

Buckwheat hulls are the outer shell that protect the kernels of grain from insects and/or extreme weather. No pesticides are used in the growing of buckwheat hulls.

What is the difference between kapok and buckwheat hulls?

The kapok fiber provides a soft, firm support, and very comfortable but will lose some of its loft and compress a little with constant sitting and should be re-shaped by patting from time to time. Buckwheat hulls do not compress with use. Like sitting in sand they will mold to your shape. They do make for a heavier cushion. It is all a matter of personal preference.

What is the guideline for selecting between medium and large kapok zafu?

Large size zafu is really taller and bigger. We recommend this for people 6' tall and over and/or weight over 200lbs. Also, we recommend large zafu if you are concerned about kapok loose some of its loft and compressing with constant sitting.

We sold more black than any other colors combined. However, if you are not sure what color you want, here is the scanned sample swatches of fabric you can take a look at. In addition, most of the fabric we have is very attractive and subtle enough for meditation. You don't want to be too colorful which can distract the meditator.
